Rich and fertile farmlands
surround Sedalia and have always contributed to the community's strong
economic base. Corn, wheat, oats and hay are some of the major crops,
and a considerable amount of livestock is raised.
For all these and other reasons,
industry in Sedalia has had a solid record of growth. A new Louis
Rich turkey processing plant is one of the latest to locate here,
joining many others that include Levi, Rival Manufacturing, Kelsey
Hays, Gardner-Denver and Pittsburgh-Corning.
Nearby Whiteman Air
Force Base has long provided employment and an economic base to
Sedalia. Named for a Sedalian hero of Pearl Harbor, it is a Strategic
Air Command facility whose latest claim to fame is the arrival of the
Stealth Bomber project.
Projections are that this latest enterprise may increase Sedalia's
population by as many as 2,000 or more military personnel and 500 to
600 civilian workers and their families. Long-term construction
projects will approach a cost of $600 million, |

according to Corps ofEngineers estimates. The increased labor pool is expected to put
Sedalia in the front running in regard to attracting new industry
and enlarging business and commercial growth in the city.
